Acquisition International - Leading Advisers 2018 225 1810AI11 Susan Abro was recently crowned Leading Marital and Family Law Attorney of the Year, South Africa in the 2018 Leading Adviser Awards. usan Abro has been practising law for more than 27 years and is the sole proprietor of her business. Admitted as an Attorney by the High Court of South Africa in 1990, Susan set up her own firm in 1995 which specialises in Family Law and Litigation and has acted in more than 3,000 matters. Dedicated to assisting clients who are experiencing difficult changes in their lives due to family law issues and to do so with professionalism, integrity, and compassion, Susan approaches each case differently and provides every client with her undivided personal attention. Her goal is for every client to receive the support that they require in matters which are often extremely emotional and involve high conflict situations and personalities. With the aim of bringing a level-headed objective approach to the table to try to resolve issues and conflicts, Susan’s goal is to exhaust all avenues of alternative dispute resolution that are available to the parties. In negotiation and litigation, she is her client’s unwavering champion. Susan is an expert on family law issues, including applications in terms of the Hague Convention on Abduction of Children - having dealt with Swedish, Australian, USA and UK jurisdictions. She is a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers. Susan is involved with public interest litigation, including, the rights of children to legal representation, Honour Based Domestic Violence, Islamic marriages, Common Law Partnerships and Civil Unions. In her capacity as Chairperson of the Family Law Committee of the Law Society of South Africa from 2007 to the present, Susan has been instrumental in introducing Arbitration in Family Law to South Africa, and has addressed Parliament about various draft legislation. Susan served as the Co- S LeadingMarital and Family LawAttorney of the Year, South Africa “Susan is involved with public interest litigation, including, the rights of children to legal representation, Honour Based Domestic Violence, Islamic marriages, Common Law Partnerships and Civil Unions.” Chairperson of the Law Society of South Africa 2003/2004. Susan acted as a Judge of the High Court of South Africa, Natal Provincial Division and was appointed by the Judicial Services Commission as a Judge of the Electoral Court for two consecutive terms, in 2005. Susan has also been heavily involved with various non-government and charitable organisations and believes that everyone has an obligation to assist those less fortunate. She has presented papers at local and international conferences dealing with, inter alia, Domestic Violence, Family Law, Matrimonial Law, Women and Children`s rights and empowerment. Susan has been nominated for and is the recipient of various awards, including the Businesswomen’s Association of South Africa, Professional Businesswoman of the year and the Family Lawyer of the Year South Africa for 2016.
