Founder and Managing Director of RSW M-L, Richard Scott-Watson has dealt with over 20,000 reports since RSW M-L began operating in 1990 and in that time has covered an exhaustive list of different injuries. Richard has particular interest and expertise in general orthopaedics, fractures and trauma, musculoskeletal injuries and all aspects of bone and soft tissue injury, including limb and spinal injuries. He is particularly interested in the disability aspect of cases as this is what matters most to the claimant and he holds among his qualifications the Diploma in Disability Assessment Medicine, which enables him to give insights and opinions on aspects of cases that are often ignored or avoided due to lack of expert knowledge. In a normal year, Richard sees approximately one thousand cases per year, covering many different types of injury. Richard’s expertise also covers multiple jurisdictions, having worked cases from Australia and the United States, and dealing in injuries that have occurred abroad and are not covered by a UK insurer. In the UK, RSW M-L’s clients are Claimant Solicitors, who Richard works with either directly or through Medical Reporting Agencies, and Defence Solicitors, who usually come direct to RSW M-L. Whilst there have been moves for Barristers to also be able to instruct Expert Witnesses such as Richard directly, this is yet to materialise. A Lifetime Achievement award-winning Orthopaedic Trauma Expert Witness, Richard also advises on reports which are required by experts in other fields and specialties. In all his work, Richard abides by the strict values that his firm was built upon, which adhere to the Civil Procedure Rules that dictate the role of ‘expert’ in relation to the Courts. Fundamentally, these rules outline an ‘expert’s’ duty to only inform the court, without taking sides. Acting as an advocate is not allowed and as such, Richard has never done so, nor will in the future. Aside from being a Lifetime Achievement award-winning Orthopaedic Trauma Expert Witness, Richard has been the recipient of countless awards. From Forensic and Expert Witness E Magazine Lifetime Achievement Award receiver for Trauma & Orthopaedics to Lawyer International Legal 100 Orthopaedic Surgeon and Disability Analyst of the year UK 2019, Corporate Live Wire Expert Witness Services Provider of the Year 2019 to 2020 Corporate Intl Magazine Global Award: Orthopaedic Therapy Expert Witness of the Year in England – 2020, and his most recent Corporate America Today. Hence Richard’s ongoing commitment to thorough, reasoned reports that are honest and sustainable. Operating with the help of his secretary, Carol Couzens, Richard carries out his work in clinics in Stourbridge, Birmingham, Coventry, Bristol, Swindon and Oxford Prison, as well as undertaking home visits. In 2020, moving around the country and carrying out face to face consultations has proven challenging in the light of Covid-19. Although RSW M-L made the rapid transition to remote interviews, Solicitors and Agencies have been slower on the uptake, meaning that the number of interviews undertaken has dropped by almost 80%. As legal services and consultations have to be managed remotely due to the pandemic, business activity will continue for RSW M-L and Richard will carry out his important, fascinating work in this way for the foreseeable future. With three decades behind him, we look forward to seeing what the next decade holds for Richard and RSW M-L. Contact: Carol Couzens (Secretary) Email:
