Influential Businesswoman Awards 2023

Acquisition International - Influential Businesswoman Awards 2023 49 lizabeth Philp co-founded Roseway Labs. When the firm first opened its doors, there were just three employees. Now there are nearly forty, spread over two work sites. That this has been achieved in just five years is a credit to the team as they stand apart in a burgeoning market. Often licensed medications don’t meet a patient’s specific needs. That’s where compounding the medication can make all the difference, with the Roseway Labs team able to produce a product that matches the patient’s needs exactly. A varied career led Elizabeth Philp to Roseway Labs, including a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Maths and two Master’s degrees, one in Organisational Behaviour and an MBA. She started out in HR roles, before progressing into consulting which allowed her the opportunity to see how many successful businesses worked, including global corporations, national organisations, government departments and small businesses. Working at Roseway Labs has allowed her to put all of this expertise into play, creating a firm that makes a real difference. For her, Roseway Labs has been the opportunity to develop a way of working that isn’t just the traditional operation. “At Roseway Labs, we are female-led with a very diverse workforce, and we believe that this makes us stronger as a company,” Elizabeth tells us. “Whilst fundraising, I had to endure comments about my age and being a mother to young children, both given as reasons for not investing in the business. Even in the past five years, this is changing but there is still a long way to go. However, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians across the UK today are predominantly female, which is a sign of the stability that the profession can offer.” In the corporate sector, Elizabeth had times when she had to endure unwanted attention from senior management, bullying and blatant discrimination in terms of pay. Roseway Labs is a direct response to this, with a transparent culture that applies to all. She has twins who she delights in, balancing their needs against the business. Instead of corporate machinations, she also champions a different approach within the firm. “We give real-time, immediate feedback that helps people to understand how to perform well,” she explains. “It can be a shock to people who aren’t used to this style, but they quickly get accustomed and realise it is just about getting the job done in the best way possible, which ultimately increases job satisfaction.” When it comes to getting more women into the sector, Elizabeth also mentors students on the London Business School entrepreneurial summer school programme. “As a female mentor, I often get E matched with a female student and we talk over a couple of months to help them develop their business idea,” she tells us. “I love seeing them explore ways to commercialise and refine the idea and always feel so proud at the final presentation.” It’s clear that the private sector is going to have more of a role to play as the NHS takes a step back, which gives businesses such as Roseway Labs more scope within which to operate. “My goal is to stay relevant,” surmises Elizabeth. “Roseway Labs has my heart and my commitment, but it will only thrive if I am open to new ideas, connected in the market and bring in the best people.” Working with private clinics across the UK, Roseway Labs is a compounding pharmacy that sees every patient as unique and believes that their medication should reflect this. Since being founded in 2018, the firm has grown to serve many clients, and has two sites in the UK. We take a closer look at the firm, and the work of Elizabeth Philp, to see precisely how they have managed to achieve such success.
