Image Caption: Gateshead Millennium Bridge One example is Gateshead Council who has completed over 67 energy efficiency projects in partnership with Salix, saving an estimated £725,000 in energy costs and 3,400 tonnes of carbon annually**. One of these projects involved upgrading the iconic Gateshead Millennium Bridge with specialist LED Lighting. ‘The lighting was installed seamlessly to the bridge throughout construction. We have reduced the energy bill whilst improving the illumination of this much used and loved Gateshead attraction.’ Derek Luke, Senior Mechanical Engineer at Gateshead Council Looking to the future, Gateshead Council have ambitious plans to improve efficiencies across their schools to create brighter and more comfortable learning environments for pupils and staff. The Council aim to do this by regulating heating and lighting in schools, installing new heating controls and LED Lighting. A further example is Kent County Council’s street lighting project. The project is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. In partnership with Salix, the Council is upgrading over 120,000 street lanterns to energy efficient LED and installing a smart Central Management System to optimise lighting. The works are set to reduce the Council’s street lighting energy consumption by 67% which equates to approximately 17,750 tonnes of carbon dioxide saved annually***. ‘As we near completion, we have been able to realise several benefits including cost savings for the taxpayer, cutting-edge technology and sustainability for the environment and future generations. We are also able to quickly rectify outages, to ensure that the correct amount of light is used, and roads are not over or under lit.’ Mike Whiting, Cabinet Member for Transport at Kent County Council This work reaches beyond delivering sustainability benefits for public sector organisations. It also improves the working and learning environments of the public sector; from brighter learning environments for children, to warmer and more comfortable patient environments within hospitals, to safer lit streets with brighter street lighting.
