54 Acquisition International - Issue 3 2019 1808AI31 Innovation, Leadership, Success Recently awarded the title of Leading Corporate Governance Lawyer of the Year, Canada, Regent Law has other exciting news to announce and plans for future growth. egent Law is a Toronto-based law firm with an Ottawa office comprised of a team of seasoned commercial litigation lawyers and savvy business counsel. Given the firm’s courtroom experience, lawyers at Regents Law know first-hand how strategies need to be developed and implemented at the front-end to avert litigation and formal restructuring proceedings. Regent’s clients come from a broad spectrum of businesses in the commercial and technology sectors. Regent is also poised to offer private international commercial law, trade law, competition law, and general procurement counsel advisory services to guide clients through the maze of domestic and foreign government export regulations. The firm was founded in 2012. It was borne out of an innovative need for a new legal paradigm. Regent’s founders created a boutique law firm to address the business needs of a distinct market niche in Canada. Regent’s vision represented a marked shift away or evolution from the business model of traditional law firms. Since Regent’s inception, the firm was focused exclusively on executing its’ vision. Justin R. Fogarty is Chairman of Regent Law and one of the founding partners. He is one of Canada’s leading lawyers specialising in corporate governance, banking, commercial litigation, insolvency, bankruptcy and restructuring, and cross-border fraud litigation. Justin has practised as a partner with several prestigious Canadian (international) law firms before establishing Regent Law. He has many reported cases in all branches of law, where he has shown his innovative approach to solving complex problems. A prolific author and past editor of the National Insolvency Review, Justin has published numerous articles and is the author of the Canadian chapter in International Insolvency: Jurisdictional Comparisons (J. William Boone, Ed.) and in Debt Restructuring: An Alternative to Insolvency Proceedings, European Lawyer Reference. He is a recent contributor to the Book on Debt Structuring to be published by European Lawyer. He has also been recognised in Chambers Global, Martindale-Hubbell and International Who’s Who Legal. He is a past board member of the Canadian Bar Association and the International Bar Association. In addition to his writings, he has been an associate professor at Osgoode Hall Law School. He is the past director of the TMA, a member of the Conference of Defence Associations Institute’s Board of Directors, as well as sitting on the executive committee of the same name. He is also currently a member of numerous private and public company boards. In addition to his legal practice, Justin was a past Honorary Colonel with the Canadian Forces and was recently appointed as a Commissioner of the Ontario Racing Commission. Justin has an LL.M. in financial services regulation and has acted for many of Canada’s major financial institutions and U.S. lenders. Justin’s thesis was on the necessity to deregulate to allow for greater competition in internet banking. In 2018 Regent Law announced its joint alliance with Burstall LLP, Calgary’s premier boutique corporate law firm, to create a new ‘national’ boutique business law firm to serve sophisticated clients and entrepreneurs across Canada. This association reflects an alignment of the same business philosophies of lawyer accessibility, personal client contact towards developing individual relationships, low overhead, and customised solutions in delivering high quality legal advice backed by a comprehensive portfolio of business legal services. Regent’s demonstrated success, as evident from its alignment with Burstall LLP, was the logical next step in its journey from the vision its founders first developed in 2012. Following this alliance, Regent Law is now pleased to announce that it will be merging with DS Lawyers Canada and the firm shall now be known as DS Lawyers Canada. These two firms share the same vision and values, centered on delivering sound business solutions and legal advice for their clients. This cohesive vision is what ties the companies together, solidifying this merger as a natural next step in each of their futures.
