Acquisition International - Issue 3 2023 25 ecognised for its prowess in the field of technology, Taiwan has long been internationally renowned for its innovation and manufacturing industry. As well as bringing its own technology to the market, Taiwan has gained a reputation as the perfect place to develop and incubate emerging technologies. With technological advancement moving at an ever-increasing pace, the need to protect ideas and intellectual property (IP) has never been greater. Allowing owners to protect the rights to their own inventions is an essential part of Taiwanese culture. This has gained the island a reputation as a pioneering marketplace with an open attitude to innovation. Clarice Chen is a specialist in IP. As a graduate of National Taiwan University, Clarice has a master’s degree in chemical engineering. Later, having received her license to practice patent law, Clarice took part in research projects in IP at the Franklin Pierce Law Center in New Hampshire, USA. And so, when Clarice opened her own IP firm, the choice to specialise in technical IP was not a difficult one. In 1990, after working for Taiwan’s biggest law firm for about 15 years, Clarice opened the doors of Sigma IPR for the first time. Today, the firm is as devoted to providing excellent IP services that safeguard its clients’ interests as ever. Clarice tells us, “Our team come from various technical backgrounds. We specialise in the patent/trademark prosecution and maintenance as well as the protection of our clients’ rights. We provide customised advisory services and research in specific fields as well as excellent services for interdisciplinary cases.” There are only a handful of IP firms in the whole of Taiwan that can boast specialist chemical and biochemical teams. And Sigma IPR has been recognised and endorsed as the most responsive, detailed, and disciplined Taiwan-based practice in its field by Leaders In Law – a multi-national platform for legal professionals. As well as chemistry/chemical engineering, Sigma IPR also covers areas such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, life sciences and biotechnology. The firm also addresses a range of patent topics in the fields of mechanics, electronics, and artificial intelligence. The firm’s services include patent and trademark searches which explore patent validity, infringement, and searches of published and unpublished cases. Patent and trademark applications and prosecutions are not limited to Taiwan. In fact, Sigma IPR manages patent and trademark prosecution cases all over the world. R In the area of patent disputes, Clarice often takes charge of the technical strategy of a case. In doing so, she has gained recognition in the field from her clients and others in the industry. Clarice is also the author of two textbooks on Patent Application Procedures and has written studies for the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office. She lectures on intellectual property topics for local and national organisations across Taiwan. Now we would like to celebrate how Sigma IPR has been named Leading IP Law Firm of the Year 2022 – Taiwan.
