6 Acquisition International - Issue 4 2019 1810AI17 The International College Of Osteopathic Manual Medicine (ICOMM) is a private school of Osteopathy. Recently, we profiled the firm and caught up with Director and Founder, Adrianus Jacobus De Koning who provided us with a detailed insight into the award-winning services ICOMM offers to their clients. ince their inception in 2007, ICOMM’s mission has been to teach, advocate and research the science, art and philosophy of osteopathy. With a desire to represent the excellence in osteopathic education, ICOMM aims to enlighten and reinforce the value of osteopathy as a philosophy and treatment modality by emphasising integration of osteopathic principles, practises and treatment within current primary health care. One of ICOMM’s main goals is to be at the forefront of osteopathic teaching and practise in Italy, but also striving towards ensuring that its teaching is current, relevant and appropriate. The practice of osteopathy uses osteopathic, medical and scientific knowledge to apply the principles of osteopathy to patient diagnosis and treatment. Going into further detail, Adrianus begins by informing us of the main aims of osteopathy and Osteopaths. “Osteopathy aims to improve and support all aspects of health, with osteopathic treatment potentially being preventive, curative, palliative or adjuvant. Osteopaths analyse and evaluate the structural and functional integrity of the body using critical reasoning of osteopathic principles to inform individual diagnosis and treatment of the patient. “The osteopathic approach to healthcare is patient-centred and focused on the patient’s health. Scientific rigour and evidence- informed practice are an important part of patient treatment and case management. “Osteopaths use manual palpation to identify and evaluate movement in all structural and functional aspects of the patient, identifying alterations of function and movement that impede health and addressing these. The highly developed sense of touch and attention to complex systems as a unit is typical of an osteopathic approach.” Having trained as a physiotherapist in the Netherlands, Adrianus felt that the profession did not satisfy him which led to his discovery of Osteopathy. Following on from the International School for Osteopathy in Doorn (Holland) in 1988, Adrianus’s career began and has been growing ever since. In 1995, Adrianus was certified as a Visceral Manipulation and CranioSacral Therapy instructor for the Barral Institute and The Upledger Institute. Currently, he teaches post-graduate courses in manual medicine across the world. In July 2008, he earned the Barral Institute Diplomate Certification which is the highest level of Certification given by Jean Pierre Barral, Alain Croibier and the Barral Institute. After directing the Barral Institute Italia and the Upledger Italia Institute for a few years, thanks to his extensive experience, Adrianus decided to found a School of Osteopathy in Italy. Faithful to the Principles and Philosophy of Osteopathy S “Osteopaths use manual palpation to identify and evaluate movement in all structural and functional aspects of the patient, identifying alterations of function and movement that impede health and addressing these. The highly developed sense of touch and attention to complex systems as a unit is typical of an osteopathic approach.”
