To celebrate her success in the Best Woman-Run Architecture Firm – UK & Award for Excellence in Interior Design, we interviewed the firm’s founder Georgina Turvey to find out more about what they can do for you. ince Georgina Turvey started PEEK Architecture + Design in 2006, they have gone from strength to strength, with continued development predominantly through referrals, many who are now long-term clients. Georgina Turvey begins by providing an overview of the firm’s exceptional services and how they achieve optimum design. “We enable our clients to create exceptional and uplifting spaces, but with our feet firmly on the ground. Our formula is simple: Inspirational and creative work with 100% transparency for the clients. “PEEK is based in Central London, and maintains a varied client base, from families and homeowners to developers. Projects include homes, developments and commercial properties, ranging from large city houses and apartments, to extensions, basements, roof conversions, refurbishments and interiors. “Clear procedures and effective communication is fundamental to achieving optimum design potential, taking a project through from initial sketches and permissions, to costing, construction detailing and interior fit out.” Georgina then draws our attention to the three stages involved in the provision of the firm’s services, the first consisting of up to scheme level drawings, planning permission and freeholder permissions. In stage one, there is the initial meeting and of course, defining the brief. In addition, a measured survey will be carried out on the existing property. A full set of existing drawings will then be drawn up on the computer in CAD, because these are required for planning and the build itself. “A full set of proposal drawings will be produced, ready to be reviewed with the client at a meeting, after which a final set of proposal drawings will be compiled. These will be used for planning and listed building applications and by engineers and party wall surveyors. Also, meetings will be held at our office or at the client’s property when required, to discuss the proposals and sketch out alternative options to produce the most optimum scheme possible. “Any required planning applications will be prepared and submitted, whether for permitted development, full planning, conservation area consent or listed building consent. We have knowledge and experience of local area policies and UDP’s, so we will liaise and negotiate with the planning officers as required. In terms of freeholder applications, we will submit information and liaise with them and other residents when required, to obtain a license to alter as well as estate management permissions.” Georgina then directs our thoughts towards stage two of their services, which are characterised by both obtaining costs and choosing a contractor. PEEK Architecture + Design will liaise and obtain quotes from engineers, for them to produce the structural scheme when required. In terms of party wall awards, the firm will coordinate any required and liaise with the surveyors, to obtain and negotiate quotes for clients. “The structural engineer will produce a full set of tender drawings, depicting all structural information, construction, finishes, electrics, heating, joinery, bathrooms, kitchens and building regulation notes. This will be used for pricing and then subsequently, to run the “‘’During the life cycle of the project, we visit site regularly, and liaise with the contractor to make sure all works are carried out in accordance with the designs. We have upmost respect for all the skilled people we encounter, construction is essentially a collaborative experience .”
