222 | UK Enterprise Awards 2023 Apr23387 Best Special Seating Systems Clinical Services Provider 2023 If there’s one thing that is certainly becoming more and more prevalent across our culture and society, it’s the drive to accommodate and innovate for those that have additional needs. It’s overdue, of course. Yet, this movement is welcome, nonetheless. In this landscape, Specialised Orthotic Services Ltd (SOS) has become a true standout in this space. We spoke with Founder and Managing Director, Gordon McQuilton MBE to find out more. There’s an obvious compassion that frames Specialised Orthotic Services alongside its services and products: compassion. A mission to provide a genuinely life-changing experience to someone who needs it. Two of the team’s most prominent products and innovations are the Miko with Flexi Seat – a modular seating system with pushchair wheelbase – and the P Pod, a beanbag seating system that provides full postural support for the user. Both are, without question, best in class examples of their type. But that standard is considered, in every way, the baseline for SOS. Gordon takes a moment to explain more about the company’s founding philosophy in his opening comments. “Here at SOS, we are dedicated to providing a service that is second-to-none for special seating needs. We put our customers and clients at the heart of everything we do. We know that posture is incredibly important. With effective early intervention and continual clinical follow up, postural management is improved to make a real difference to our end users’ lives, both their health outcomes and their well-being. “Our vision is to provide the best possible innovative special seating system, and other rehabilitation products, coupled with a quality service to our clients, no matter how complex their disabilities. We achieve this by working closely with individuals, clinicians, and carers to design products which deliver practical solutions ensuring that the end user’s needs are met to help them better face their daily challenges.” But let’s take a closer look at the two incredible products we mentioned earlier, starting with the Miko with Flexi Seat, from the perspective Gordon has explained here. The Miko – and indeed the P Pod – is designed to focus on posture from the ground up. There’s a range of postural support options as standard, in two sizes, supporting users from one year old and up. If the Miko with Flexi Seat was created for life on the move, the P Pod was designed for full comfort and support at home, or in a schooling environment. While described as a bean bag, it still maintains that crucial posture support, with additional considerations to ensure comfort. It’s this sort of innovative design choice that has forged SOS’s formidable reputation in this industry. Ultimately, Gordon and SOS have created something special indeed, helping to drive momentum towards accessibility and the highest quality of care. For that, and many other reasons besides, the team were recognised as Best Special Seating Systems Clinical Services Provider 2023 – well-deserved in every way.
