Acquisition International - Issue 1 2020 29 Oct19339 Have you ever wondered what comes out of West Yorkshire? Based just out of Bradford, Regal Foods creates a vast range of delicious delicacies. We caught up with them to find out how they’d grown from their modest bakery beginnings to a formidable force that can hold its own on the supermarket shelves. Food Fit For A King hen they describe themselves as a manufacturer and distributor of world foods, it really does Regal Foods a disservice. This company offers foods that have far outstripped its humble beginnings as a bakery and now holds considerable market influence. There are very few sweet or savoury items you can’t find at Regal Foods. From cakes to crisps to the more exotic Bombay or Punjabi mixes, you’ll be sure that if it’s a snack worth having, they’ll have it. It’s a far cry from their humble beginnings as a bakery that only served local shops. That was in 2001. Now, eighteen years later, Regal Foods has customers, clients and fans around the globe. Its food items have been sent to over fifty different countries. As far as testimonials go, the sheer amount of expansion that the company has undergone in the past few years has been exceptional. This has come from the ability of Regal Food to cater to all tastes. Whether it’s a snack, drink or bakery product, whether it’s traditionally British or from further shores, the magic of Regal Food’s breadth of product is such that anyone can partake of its delights. Currently, the plan for the brand is further expansion, with the already incredibly diverse inventory of products broadening its outlook. For Regal Foods, the future comes from catering to those who must go without, such as the gluten-free and sugar-free markets. Tapping into these markets will add a further feather to a not-inconsiderable cap. Far outreaching that Bradford baseline, Regal Foods can be found in the ‘Big Four’ of the UK’s supermarkets. Those who were there at the beginning are no doubt bemused that their quaint family run business can now be counted as a household name, with its products found in Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Adsa and Morrisons. This is often due to significant demand from the general public, a leading source of business for the Yorkshire company. Many new stockists approach Regal Foods because their customers request their items especially. W From its origins as a family run bakers, the team behind Regal Foods has grown to match the sheer amount of product made by the company. Despite this potential loss of the family connection that bound Regal Foods together, the bond has become even stronger. All team members are considered part of the Regal family, with a close-knit union of staff able to accomplish the goals of the company year after year. Economic uncertainties in terms of how exports and imports are handled has affected the industry beyond Regal Foods. As an importer and exporter of food, uncertainty makes the business a harder place to work. Nevertheless, the hard-working team behind these snacks and cakes are confident that no matter what adversity is thrown at them, they will overcome. With an enviable growth that would surprise even the most optimistic of analyst, Regal Food has gone from strength to strength. Having taken the supermarkets by storm, it has now proven that it can hold its own on a world stage. At heart though, this business was originally family-run and retains that same attitude. Its tremendous success is down to giving customers exactly what they want: good food.
