A Handy Guide to Choosing the Ideal Personal Injury Lawyer

You may walk around thinking that you may never need a lawyer, as you pride yourself on being the safest person on planet Earth. You may be someone who’s following all the rules and ensuring your actions don’t cause harm to you or those around you. Unfortunately, other people may not be so considerate.

You need to be prepared when disaster strikes. Accidents tend to cause serious physical, psychological, and financial damage. Victims will have a hard time getting back to normal life. It’s especially difficult for those who’ve suffered severe injuries, some form of disability or disfigurement, or lost a loved one.

A lawyer is a reliable companion in times like this. Reputable ones, like The Rawlins Firm, work to ensure their clients get fair compensation. The services of a lawyer are essential in personal injury claims, as victims can be easily tricked into accepting a low offer.

Unfortunately, choosing one isn’t as simple as taking a stroll in a park. There are a lot of things to consider. And that’s what this article is all about. Read on to find out more.

1. Ask people you know

The best way to find a lawyer is by asking people you know. They can be anyone, from relatives to friends of relatives, colleagues to friends of colleagues, and so on. You’re sure to receive at least a couple of names when you inquire for lawyers within your contacts.

Sometimes, the lawyer they suggest may belong to a different field of law. In such cases, get in touch with that lawyer and ask for a reference.

2. Head to the internet

The internet is a gold mine of resources. Visit legal directories that list lawyers and their contact information. Try out the website of the local bar organization to find lawyers in a specific field. If you still can’t find any, just search for your case-related term on Google and start from there.

3. Law firm size

There are big law firms, and there are small law firms. Bigger law firms have plenty of resources and are great for complex, high-risk cases like business takeovers. Their rates will usually be on the higher side. Smaller firms, on the other hand, are ideal for cases that aren’t very complicated. You’ll have to choose one based on your requirements.

4. Research

Don’t just hire the first lawyer you find. Do your research on them. Look them up on review sites and read client testimonials, if any. Look for patterns in the reviews for better judgment.

Also, don’t forget to visit the lawyer’s website. Is it professional? Does it have client testimonials? Factors like this are useful in learning more about a lawyer.

5. Prepare for the interview

Be confident on your first visit. Compile a list of questions that you plan to ask. Here are some questions to get you started.

  • What should I expect?
  • How do you plan to update me about the case?
  • Have you handled any similar cases?
  • What is your response time?
  • How many people will be working on my case?

Questions like these shed light on your lawyer’s expertise, attitude, and how involved they will be in your case.

6. The fees

This is an important one. You should ask whether the lawyer will work on a contingency fee basis. If not, ask them whether you will be billed hourly or if there will be a flat charge.

Hourly charges and flat charges have their own complications. If your lawyer charges hourly, ask them about

  • The hourly charge
  • Minimum billing increments
  • Charges for phone calls, emails, letters, and emails (if any)
  • Duration of the case

Don’t forget to ask these questions if your lawyer charges a flat fee.

  • Expected duration of the case
  • Expected expenses

Final thoughts

You now have all the resources you need to hire a personal injury lawyer. Don’t shy away from asking questions, no matter how silly they sound. Your case will be a lot smoother with the ideal personal injury lawyer.
